Abstract:

This contribution is part of the program about « The perception of floods in the basin of the Vilaine », a study initiated by the Institute of development of la Vilaine, under the supervision of Nadia Dupont, conference master at the University of Rennes 2 in Brittany.

It studies the space process of extension of the city and its consequences for two communes: Bruz and Monfort-sur-Meu through a socio-geographical approach (maps and enquiries). These two cities are examples of peripheral urbanisation of a metropolis submitted to floods, however each outer layer of consequent water rises was retained following different methods. The urban limits have been determined by photo-interpretation.

The urban areas have grown partly in flooding areas. The history of the establishment of the individual habitats in floodable areas shows that this phenomenon is not necessarily related to a recent urbanization. In the same time, the urbanization in floodable areas is likely to be stopped.

Interviews carried out with economic actors (local stores, companies, craftsmen and independent workers) made it possible to apprehend their qualification of the risk and the modes of prevention and protection which they set up.
